Harry Rockland-Miller, Ph.D.
Dr. Rockland-Miller recently retired from the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he was the Director of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Health and Executive Director for Wellness and served as a core member of the Student Affairs and Campus Life Leadership team. For 22 years he led a multidisciplinary university clinic providing short-term psychotherapies, psychopharmacological services, community consultation, training and 24-hour crisis services. For 16 of those years he also served as Associate Director of the University Health Services. He then went on to join the UMASS Student Affairs Leadership Team, and also supervised Health Promotion. As a key player in the evolution of a coordinated campus crisis response, he initiated or co-initiated many of the key response structures now in place on campus.
Rockland-Miller is a national trainer, presenter and consultant in areas including college mental health, clinical triage, suicide prevention and mental health care delivery. Other clinical interests include crisis intervention, brief therapy and hospital-based treatment. He was a two-time recipient and Principal Investigator for a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrator grant providing suicide prevention training on the UMass Amherst campus. He also is a trainer with the American Association of Suicidology, teaching the Recognizing and Responding to Suicide Risk course nationally. In 2017, Rockland-Miller was awarded the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors’ (AUCCCD) Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contribution to campus mental health “at the highest national levels.” Dr. Rockland-Miller serves on the editorial board of the Journal of College Student Psychotherapy. Prior to joining the university, he worked in mobile and hospital crisis intervention and inpatient psychiatry settings, including founding a hospital based crisis service and serving as Interim Vice President of Behavioral Health at Holyoke Hospital. He completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1986 at the California School of Professional Psychology-Berkeley. In 2006 Dr. Rockland-Miller completed an Advanced Program in Organization Development and Human Resources Management at Columbia University/Teacher’s College.
Dennis Heitzmann, Ph.D.
Dr. Dennis Heitzmann transitioned to private practice, organizational development, executive coaching, and litigation consulting in 2017 after 33 years as senior director of the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, and Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs at Pennsylvania State University. Prior to his arrival at Penn State, Dr. Heitzmann served as director of the Center for Student Development at the University of Memphis, and director of Counseling Services at Rhodes College. He received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Texas, Austin.
Dr. Heitzmann’s entire career has been spent directing university counseling services while contributing to broad-based initiatives in Student Affairs, supplemented by private practice and organizational consultation. As a licensed psychologist and affiliate professor in the clinical and counseling psychology doctoral programs at two universities, Dr. Heitzmann has taught at the graduate level, conducted research, supervised numerous doctoral students in training, and served on doctoral dissertation committees.
Throughout his career, Dr. Heitzmann has aspired to provide leadership in his professional arena, having served as President of the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD), and as President of the International Accreditation of Counseling Services (IACS), the primary accreditation agency for university counseling services. During his tenure as AUCCCD President, Dennis established Elements of Excellence, an AUCCCD standing committee ...“to provide impetus and structure for the organization to address leadership development, management skill development, and creative thinking about current and future issues affecting counseling centers”. In addition, he has been an organizational consultant and accreditation site visitor at over 100 universities in the US and internationally, workshop conductor, lecturer and program presenter on various topics including student mental health, students at risk, managed behavioral health care, student athlete mental health, and collaborative mental health. Dr. Heitzmann received the Distinguished Service Award from IACS for his continuing commitment to assisting university counseling centers to achieve the highest standards of practice. In 2012 Dr. Heitzmann was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from AUCCCD for his career contributions to counseling center endeavors, and the AUCCCD President’s Award in 2016 and 2022 for his continuing leadership in the field.
Senior Associates
Cory Wallack, Ph.D.
Dr. Cory Wallack is the Executive Director for Health and Wellness at Syracuse University. In this capacity, Dr. Wallack oversees the integrated offices of counseling, health, health promotion, and recreation. Prior to the Executive Director role, Dr. Wallack served as the Director of Counseling at Syracuse University for ten years and held a Clinical Faculty appointment in Syracuse University’s department of Counseling and Human Services. At Syracuse, Dr. Wallack serves on the Chancellor’s Task Force on Sexual and Relationship Violence, the Senior Vice President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion, the University Senate committee on Diversity and Inclusion, the Threat Assessment and Management Team, and the Enterprise Risk Management Team.
During his time at Syracuse University, Dr. Wallack developed Campus Connect: A Suicide Prevention Training for Gatekeepers. In 2007 the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention recognized Campus Connect as a National Best Practice. Currently, approximately 175 campuses across the United States and Canada utilize Campus Connect and Dr. Wallack has served as a trainer and consultant for many of these campuses. Dr. Wallack has previously served as an advisory board member for the Jed Foundation, was a project contribution to the Higher Education Mental Health Alliance’s guide for responding to suicide on campus, and has conducted numerous presentations at national conferences related to collegiate mental health. As a member of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors, he served six years as a member of the organization’s leadership development committee. He received his Ph.D. in counseling Psychology from the University of Florida.
As a member of the Association of University and College Counseling Center Directors, he served six years, including two years as co-chair, of the Elements of Excellence committee, which is tasked with leadership development and creative thinking about current and future issues affecting counseling centers.
Dr. Wallack is passionate about developing and implementing integrated service delivery models, reducing barriers that limit care access for individuals from marginalized identity groups, organizational design, and leadership development.
James Terhune, Ed.M.
Jim Terhune is the Vice President for Student Affairs at Swarthmore College where he has served as the chief student affairs officer since 2018. Prior to Swarthmore, Jim spent 10 years as Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Colby College and 15 years in several leadership roles at Colgate University, including Dean of Student Affairs and Dean of First-Year Students. He began his career in higher education in the Dean of Students Office at Middlebury College. Mr. Terhune has an A.B. from Middlebury College and an Ed.M. from Harvard University.
A highly regarded and innovative educator, Terhune has nearly four decades of experience in higher education leadership, including extensive work both partnering and providing executive oversight to counseling and health services programs. He has been at the forefront of improving and expanding mental health services for his students throughout his career. Terhune has partnered with health and counseling directors to establish strategic priorities and secure necessary resources to serve students. At both Swarthmore and Colby, he expanded staffing and financial support for student mental health services and established Care/Student of Concern teams to ensure better continuity of care and support for students confronting personal and health related concerns. He has partnered closely with mental health providers to develop and streamline emergency and critical incident response procedures and MOUs with hospitals and local emergency response agencies. He has worked in concert with counseling center directors to evaluate and assess staffing and clinical services models, expand outreach programs, and introduce effective peer to peer programs. Additionally, Terhune has collaborated with health and counseling professionals to manage hundreds of individual cases involving students confronting all manner of health-related issues.
In 2016 Mr. Terhune launched James Terhune Consulting, LLC to provide experienced counsel, practical advice, and strategic assistance to colleges and independent schools.
